Some homes have a problem with windows sweating on the inside, especially during the winter, the frames and the sills can become wet as well. This even happens on newer homes that are well insulated. If you have this problem, the humidity level in your home is probably a bit too high.

Most people think there is a problem with their windows when they start to sweat, quite the contrary, the windows are doing their job of sealing up your home. The problem is there is too much moisture in the indoor air, too much humidity.

Newer homes are typically built much more tightly than older ones. This is good for many reasons, but one bad side effect is that moisture generated indoors doesn’t escape as easily.

Increasing the ventilation in the home (creating a path of escape) is a very simple way to reduce the condensation on the windows. Proper ventilation will not only create much needed air exchanges, pollutant and allergen removal from the home, but will also exhaust the moisture and reduce the high humidity. Once the humidity level in the indoor air drops, there will no longer be enough moisture in the air to condensate on the cool window surfaces.

If you have a newer home, it is possible that your new home is still drying out: New concrete, wood and other materials usually take 12 to 18 months to dry, depending on drying conditions. You can’t control this, but you can assist this process by increasing ventilation rates.
